Skirting boards are able to cover any imperfections in plaster work or gaps where the floor and wall meet to ensure your room’s decoration looks as smart as possible. Most are made of wood or plastic depending on the purpose of the room in which it shall be fitted.

For example:

• MDF (wood) – usually used in living and dining areas to smarten up the appearance of the interior design.
• PVC (plastic) – usually used in kitchens and utility rooms where spillages occur most often as they are easy to be wiped clean.

Picture rails, traditionally placed 3/4 of the way up your wall enable you to:

• Hang pictures and photos without having to drill through your wall
• Dividing up your wall if you want to paint the wall more than one colour (usually leaving the top 1/4 of your wall and ceiling the same colour)
• Dividing up your wall if you wish to have the bottom 3/4 wall papered and the top 1/4 ceiling painted.

Dado rails serve the same purpose with regards to dividing up your walls – these are usually placed 1/2 way up your wall.
